John Fredenburg is a recording engineer in Manhattan specializing in Classical and Jazz music. Playing bass guitar since the age of 12, he studied under both Ronald Bland and Peter Mark Princiotto. He got his start in audio while recovering from a near fatal case of wood poisoning acquired while snowboarding down Peak 8 in Breckenridge. Under heavy sedation, he had a dream that he was going to become a Rocket Scientist and immediately enrolled in school, but eventually decided to use his engineering knowledge to help people instead of making money and, with guidance from professor Roy Pritts (Join AES!), earned a Bachelor of Science in Music from the University of Colorado. John continued his studies at the Peabody Conservatory with A.T. Michael MacDonald and received a Masters of Arts in Audio Sciences, and while there entered and won the Stereo: Classical category at the Audio Engineering Society's 125th Convention recording competition. In his spare time, John tinkers with electronics, completely rebuilding and modifying his 1988 FireGlo Rickenbacker 4003, as well as building a dual mono-block 180 watt class-D amplifier and the set of loudspeakers that he uses in his monitoring chain. Last summer during a residency at the Banff Centre, he had the privilege of working on his microphone technique with guest faculty Joe Ferla, Steve Bellamy and Mark Willsher.
